With the own design cabinet-making and office and upholstery workshops, Herter Brothers were prepared to accomplish every aspect of home furnishing including decorative mantels and paneling, ceiling and wall decoration, patterned floors, and draperies and carpets.

A pivotal shape in popularizing theories of home design to the middle class was the architect Owen Jones, one of the most important design theorists of the nineteenth century. Jones' first task was his most important--in 1851 he was responsible for not only the adornment of Joseph Paxton's gigantic Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition, but for the arrangement of the displays within also.
