With their own design cabinet-making and office and upholstery workshops, Herter Brothers were prepared to accomplish every part of home furnishing including decorative paneling and mantels, ceiling and wall decoration, patterned floors, and carpets and draperies.

In 1882, the London Listing of the Post Office posted 80 home decorators. Some of the most distinguished companies of the period were Crace, Waring & Gillow and Holland & Sons; famous decorators utilized by these firms included Thomas Edward Collcutt, Edward William Godwin, Charles Barry, Gottfried Semper, and George Edmund Avenue.
